Kentaro Takizawa - Gradual Life (2006)

Two decades since its birth in New York and Chicago, and almost as long since it migrated to Japan, house music is spawning a new generation of DJs and producers to guide it into the future.

Among those in Japan is 25-year-old Tokyoite Kentaro Takizawa. First exposed to house while still in elementary school and already producing his own tracks in junior high, Takizawa has an album under his belt, as well as numerous club residencies and remixes for the likes of Ayumi Hamasaki.

His follow-up to 2004’s Impressive Time is Gradual Life, out on top Japanese house imprint Flower Records. For this album, Takizawa teamed up with some of the better young musicians in Japan, including singer Medby and keyboardist Hajime Yoshizawa (of jazz combo Sleepwalker), as well as New York vocalist Lisa Shaw.

Mtume and Lucas - Best of Mtume and Lucas [2004]

Through playing with Miles, Mtume & Lucas were always surrounded by the best musicians, so when they were called in to work with Roberta Flack they knew who to put together a section of players. People like Howard King (drums),Michael Henderson (bass), and Hubert Eaves (keyboards) became the bedrock of their sound.

James Mtume met Reginald Grant Lucas in Philadelphia while playing with Miles Davis in the early 70s. Mtume's father was James Heath who together with uncles performed and recorded as The Heath Brothers. Mtume, who played guitar and percussion, learnt his craft on the jazz circuit with Herbie Hancock, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson and then Freddie Hubbard who introduced him to Miles and got hired as percussionist.Reggie Lucas also played guitar and worked with artists like Norman Connors, Lonnie Liston Smith and Billy Paul before Miles hired him a year after James as guitarist.

Their recording collaborations began in the jazz world and first gained some recognition in 1976 with the Miles Davis inspired trumpeter Eddie Henderson on the jazz funk anthem 'Say You Will' which they co-wrote (and is include on the Soul Brother collection 'Anthology').

'I didn't take note at the time', James recalls, 'But after getting along so well as session players, Reggie and I began talking about ideas for songs, so at the start of it I guess you could say it just happened. 'We cut a demo on a group from Howard University called Hot Tea as our first project, and that's where we met Tawatha Agee who was one of the vocalists along with Angela Winbush'. Tawatha later became the vocalist for Mtume's group (singing 'Juicy Fruit) after much involvement with Mtume & Lucas as a backing singer, vocal contractor and co-songwriter (before later working with Aretha, Luther, Diana Ross and much more recently Marlon Saunders).

'Juciy Fruit' was the metamorphosis for James Mtume, a complete departure from anything done previously and in effect marked the end of the Mtume & Lucas era. 'When Reggie and I worked together our style was lush and pretty, but then it was time for a change so I went for a neo minimalist approach using very few musicians and no reverb'. There would be no more Mume & Lucas after 'Juicy Fruit', and in case you are wondering, there are no previously unreleased gems to be unearthed. 'When we cut an album, we wrote and produced to order so there was no wastage and nothing that didn't get used'. The closest we would get to hearing one of Reggie' sweet melodies again would actually be on 'Borderline' which he wrote for Madonna! Meanwhile, after a few free lance productions (including some Mary J. Blige,Roy Ayers, The Barkays, Tyrone Brunson and music for 'New York Undercover'),James retired from music altogether and currently hosts a political chat show on New York's 98.7 Kiss FM.

Rick James - The Ultimate Collection [1981]

Before Prince, Rick James was the artist on the edge of funk, with his hard-edge grooves underpinning tales of urban street life. Although James has not sustained the superstardom he enjoyed in the late '70s and early '80s, his hooks have turned up as samples in rap-era hits, most notably M.C. Hammer's "You Can't Touch This," which was entirely built on James's "Super Freak". Starting with such dance floor classics as "You and I," The Ultimate Collection" is a party record, packed with pop hooks, funk beats, and James's rock-inflected vocals. An impressive collection.

Rick James - Street Songs [1981]

Rick James is more remembered for his drug and criminal problems but in his hey day, he produced some superior funk music. Street Songs ranks with any funk album and Mr. James has never been better. The album features the ubiquitous "Super Freak" which has taken on a life of its own. Despite the saturation of it, the song has a vicious bass line and is a master groove. There are other superb cuts on the album like the sultry "Give It To Me Baby", the open come on of "Make Love To Me", the smoldering "Fire & Desire" and "Call Me". The album isn't all about parties as he speaks of inner city troubles in "Ghetto Love" that is set over a sweet groove, the scathing indictment of police indifference in "Mr. Policeman" and the drug scene in "Below The Funk (Pass The J)".

Rick James - Bustin' Out Of L Seven [1979]

Rick James was another music genius with his funk rythms.Think what you might about Rick James, this is actually a pretty darn funky album -- with lots of tight bass-heavy grooves! Rick's working here with the Stone City Band, in a style that's leaner and less commercial than some of his later work -- going for a mainstream funk approach, but still leaving enough roughness around the edge to make the album appealing to our ears. In a way, the sound here is kind of a tightening up of Fantasy Records funk, given a few P-Funk twists -- slick, but never too slick to groove soulfully! The two slow tunes "Space Love" and "Jefferson Ball" have enough sassy sax solo's and backup vocals for a superb late night groove!"Cop N Blow" Pre-Dated alot of the things that Prince would later add to His Music in the Mid 80's.

Jamie Davis - It's All About Love (2002)

Jamie Davis holds a position amongst the pantheon of great male vocalists with a full deep baritone voice that has been paired with some of the world’s most famous talent. Davis counts Patty Austin, Tony Bennett, George Benson, the Count Basie Orchestra, Rosemary Clooney, Jimmy Cobb and Billy Cobham.

Davis was named the "chocolate baritone" by Sir Michael Parkinson, the BBC’s arbiter of important international Jazz, after his 2007 performance in London with the BBC’s sixty-four piece orchestra. Last year’s schedule included the Cheltenham Festival, the Jerry Lewis Telethon in Las Vegas and tours at home and abroad. Davis also performs regularly for both public and private events in United States and Europe.

During his career, Davis has traveled and performed extensively around the world as a headliner and as the lead vocalist for the Count Basie Orchestra. His full rich, deep baritone voice was tapped to narrate ‘A Time To Remember,’ a docudrama which won the Black American Independent Filmmakers Award.

His first solo CD, "It's All About Love" was released in late February 2002 with rave reviews. This CD features all beautiful love ballads, which is Jamie's forte.

Welcome to Sunlightsquare, the brilliant brainchild of pianist Claudio Passavanti, a multi-faceted fusion of jazz and electronica destined to devastate dance floors, as well as soundtrack the morning after as night breaks to day. Considering the music is imbued with a warm summer groove, it's surprising that the record is completely inspired by Claudio’s relocation to the heart of East London. In a little studio, a stone's throw from vibrant Shoreditch and the excitable pulse of Brick Lane, Claudio soaked up the urgent beat of the East End and combined it with his love for organic jazz instrumentation.

Joe McBride - Lookin' for a Change [Adv][2009]

Lookin' for a Change [Lossless]

A longtime stalwart of the contemporary jazz scene, Joe McBride takes a detour from his usual path for an intriguing new recording that reinterprets a dozen contemporary pop songs via straight ahead jazz arrangements. Fleshed out with the help of a live trio - guitarist Dan Wilson, bassist Roger Hines and drummer Elijah Gilmore," Lookin' For A Change" is a collection of songs originally written and recorded by a range of pop luminaries, including Gnarls Barkley, Coldplay, John Mayer, Seal and several others. These reinterpretations, along with three original compositions from McBride's own inspirational well, make for an engaging juxtaposition of the best elements of contemporary pop and traditional jazz.

"The majority of my releases in the past have been primarily electronic," says McBride, "with an acoustic piano playing over the top of arrangements that were primarily put together with drum machines and other technology. I've loved contemporary jazz. It's been a lot of fun playing that kind of music. But I wanted to move forward a little bit, demonstrate a little growth, try something new."

More than just pure musical entertainment, McBride sees Lookin' for a Change as a learning experience for listeners from different generations - himself included. As is so often the case, creating something new required a reacquaintance with the old stuff. "As the project came together, the process became very educational - for me as much as anyone else who heard some of the early tracks," says McBride. "I had forgotten some of the jazz roots of my youth, the straightahead stuff that I had learned back in high school and college - the Miles and the Coltrane and the Charlie Parker. So this project kind of took me back a little bit too. I had to really do my homework on some of the theory in this music."

But McBride has no reservations about digging in and doing the hard work for the sake of his craft. "I wouldn't trade now for any of the other years of my life," he says. "I feel very good about this record. I feel like I'm in a fresh spot. I'm ready to broaden my horizons, and maybe broaden the horizons of some of my listeners as well. It's all about the love for the music, and the willingness to try something new. Anyone who knows me knows that I'm trying something new every day."

Joe McBride - Gift For Tommorow [1994]

Dallas-based pianist/vocalist Joe McBride is known among his peers as one of the most talented individuals in the industry today. A Gift for Tomorrow, Joe's second release for Heads Up, only embellishes that reputation.

This Gift includes several tracks with McBride as vocalist which are to be reckoned with; spirited covers of pop classics like "Walking in Rhythm," "Deja Vu," and "You've Got a Friend;" and totally satisfying guest appearances by Larry Carlton, Kirk Whalum and Dave Koz.

"A Gift for Tomorrow is just as uplifting as Grace is," says Joe, "but just a bit more in tune with my R&B roots. The jazz/hip-hop hybrid is really the music of the Nineties, and I think blending the two is a logical direction for my music to take. This album digs a little deeper in terms of the playing, and shows a lot of growth from the first. The gift I offer is one of uplifting messages - I want to reach people with a sophisticated yet likeable sound that gets them away from the negative things in their lives."

VA - Soul Desirables [2007]

“Soul Desirables” is not a typical soul compilation. This unique collection is, instead, the fruits of three years hard work to ensure an awesome combination of soul songs, mixes, remixes and productions not easily found elsewhere, if at all. Most of the music here has not had a prior commercial release. it’s either been restricted to bonus mixes on promotional CDs or 12”s, unreleased albums, internet sound files or rare foreign issues. Still, the main emphasis here is the sheer quality of the music, the production and the artists who have created these recordings for major labels such as Motown, MoJazz, Arista, Columbia, Virgin, Island Records, Talkin’ Loud and Universal. The expense lavished on these recordings is what independent soul artists can only dream of, and thus too good not to be showcased on a CD such as this. Tracks by Ronee Martin, Tiffany, Donald McCollum and Incognito will appeal straight to a ‘modern soul’ audience where floor-fillers such as this are the bedrock of all-dayers and weekenders. Elsewhere the sophistication of K.Fox and Jack Herrera with the beauty of neo soul acts Sara Devine, Lathun/India Arie, Donnie, Kenny Lattimore and Trina Broussard add to the splendour of this album – not to forget the incredible Mica Paris who’s song “Sixth Street” is heavily in demand. VA - The Spirit of Philadelphia Vol.2 [2006]

Four years after the 1st vol. of this "Spirit of Philadelphia" series, Ralph Tee has compiled another great stock of rare or quite unknown philly soul gems. Some are very fine and hard-to find cuts like the 12" version of Gateway's "Can't accept the fact" or David Morris "Midnight lady".Philly veteran Vince Montana's "That what love does" alone is worth the price of the entire CD !

This is what has inspired an idea for this compilation, and so the concept for this album is a collection of songs relevant to today's modern soul scene that either come directly from Philadelphia or reflect the spirit of the sound during its heyday. It also tries to offer songs not already available on other compilations, which is why it omits the likes of Vivian Reed and Bettye Swann (Don't miss Kent's excellent 'So Soulful 70s'), and showcases the sound of Philadelphia beyond the walls of Philadelphia International Records.

VA - Spirit of Philadelphia Vol.1 [2002]

The Spirit of Philadelphia released by the togetherness team compiled by Ralph Tee 18 tracks taken from labels other than Philly International and not available on other compilations.

The first Soul Togetherness compilation in 2000 came at an interesting time for the modern soul scene. While the sound of Philadelphia had been integral to the birth of the term modern soul itself in the 70s, the big records historically had been the anthems from the mighty Philadelphia International under the driving force of Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. However on this side of the new millennium there has been a shift of interest to lesser known songs from the period that were overshadowed at the time. These were records not on PIR, but on other labels keen to find their artists some of the Philly magic during the heyday years of 1972 through to about 1978. Many of the records were the real thing utilising exactly the same musicians as Gamble & Huff, others were imitations, but all had the spirit of the Philadelphia sound at this unique point in time.

Naturally many of these records have been known to DJs and collectors from the start, but steadily more of these records are coming to the fore more prolifically at today's modern soul events. One of my own revivals was The Manhattans' 'I Don't Want To Pay The Price Of Losing You', a superb Bobby Martin arranged gem from 1974 featuring Vince Montana, Norman Harris and the Don Renaldo strings. It's featured on 'Soul Togetherness 2000'. Meanwhile Ian Levine began playing Dianne Steinberg's 'One More Time' in his modern sets at 'The Rocket', Richard Searling had fallen in love with The Whispers 'Will You Be Mine', Terry Jones was playing Vivian Reed's 'Save Your Love For Me' and the whole scene had woken up to Bettye Swann's 'Kiss My Love Goodbye'.

Opolopo aka Peter Major was raised in a quite musical environment since his father was a keyboard player with his own band and his mother used to give piano lessons. He was obviously affected by the constant music played at home, however that didn't work for him. He started hammering away on the piano himself instead. VA/Tru Thoughts - Shapes 09:01 [2009]

Tru Thoughts’ first Shapes compilation of 2009 is a rather massive 29 track double CD collection, featuring a selection of current highlights, remixes and exclusive tracks from acts including Quantic and his Combo Bárbaro, Bonobo, Belleruche, The Bamboos, Nostalgia 77 Sessions featuring Keith and Julie Tippett, Kinny, Stonephace and all the excellent artists currently signed to the roster, of which there are far too many to mention in one coherent sentence. Suffice to say, over the two discs – arranged into ‘home listening’ and ‘DJ’ modes – there is plenty of great music for your ears and dancefloors, from minimal soul through downtempo beats and lush jazzy vocal tracks to floor-filling basslines.

The exclusive tracks on the compilation include drum ‘n’ bass producer Kjell’s remix of The Bamboos’ “Amen Brother” cover; exclusive dancefloor bangers from Azaxx and Hint; a Broken Keys remix of Natural Self’s “The Rising” featuring Andreya Triana; Opolopo remixing Lanu; and a never-before-released, spine-tingling acoustic version of The Bamboos’ “I Don’t Wanna Stop” featuring Kylie Auldist. There’s also a killer Examples of Twelves remix of Lizzy Parks, as well as appearances from Part Time Heroes, Unforscene, Freddie Cruger aka Red Astaire, Mr Beatnick and that master of the catchy hook, Flevans, who has recently re-signed to Tru Thoughts.

To reflect the sheer wealth of DJ weapons that Robert Luis (Tru Thoughts A&R) has managed to amass for this compilation, there will also be a limited pressing of 500 numbered 7 track vinyl featuring some of the biggest cuts and boasting the full double CD inside as well.

Paul Taylor - Burnin' [Adv][2009]

With Burnin', Taylor follows the spectacular success of his 2007 disc Ladies’ Choice - the saxman’s first ever #1 (and #1 debut) on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Chart - with the most powerful and robust musical statement of his career. Burnin’ is an explosive set of decidedly retro and old school soul influences, which reunites the saxman for the fourth time with veteran R&B/jazz hit makers Barry Eastmond (Al Jarreau, Peabo Bryson, Jonathan Butler, Anita Baker) and Rex Rideout (Richard Elliot, Gerald Albright, Boney James, Najee). Pushing his artistic envelope as never before, Taylor stretches beyond his usual soprano and alto comfort zone and plays lead melody on nine of the ten tracks on tenor sax for the very first time.

The clever Eastmond to Rideout to Eastmond track-to-track flow on Burnin’ essentially echoes the way Taylor has switched off on his previous collaborations with the producers, which include 2003’s Steppin’ Out and 2005’s Nightlife. Casual listeners might be having such a blast swaying and grooving that they may not notice the switch off. Another reason for this is the consistency of Taylor’s rhythm section under both producers--all the tracks feature Darrell Crooks on guitar and Michael White on drums; Melvin Lee Davis plays bass on seven tracks, while Ronnie Garrett handles it on three others.

Paul Taylor - On the Horn [1995]

Paul Taylor defines what a sax player should be on this CD. Smooth, cool, uplifting and absolutely enjoyable to listen to. I first heard Erotica on the radio and went out and bought On The Horn that same day.

A mellow soul classic from Chicago -- and one of the last great records to come out of the city's hip 70s soul scene! We know very little about Crystal Winds -- save for this excellent record, one of the few titles issued on the short-lived Cash Ear label, a south-side imprint in the tradition of 70s powerhouse labels like Curtom or Chi-Sound. The work's got a wonderfully polished feel -- lots of jazzy harmonies on the vocals, and a smooth midtempo groove that reminds us of some of the best work on Fantasy Records, especially those handled by Wayne Henderson and At Home Productions. Till Bronner - Midnight [2009]

”Calling Till Brönner the new aspiring German trumpet talent is obsolete, since he has sold more records than any other German jazz musician. He plays big time now and is well known in the New York jazz circuit, which itself is top of the crop.” " Midnight" was recorded in 1997 on the RCA Victor label. Verve has released this hidden gem this year.

A young traditionalist from Germany, Till Brönner owes a big debt to Chet Baker. On his Verve debut, Love, the trumpeter plays it cool, muted, and lyrical, reducing songs to their melodic essence.

One of the most successful German pop stars is a jazz musician, as the magazine Musikexpress aptly summed it up: Till Bronner, the exceptionally gifted trumpeter, succeeds in directly touching people with his beautiful melodies between hard bop, honky-tonk and hit parade and lends a distinctive new sound to Jazz - with brilliant clarity and undisguised expressiveness.

Cris Delanno (2006)

Born in 1969 in Texas, Cris Delanno and her family moved back to Brazil when she was three years old. Two years later the little girl started to sing in Rio de Janeiro's Coral Infantil do Teatro Municipal (Children's Choir of the Municipal Theatre). This event marked the start of a life that is dedicated to singing. Between 1993 and 1995 Cris went back to the USA, accepting an invitation as soloist for the African American Unity gospel choir. In 1999 she shared her knowledge about the basic vocal techniques in her book Mais Que Nunca É Preciso Cantar, illustrated by interviews with singers like Leila Pinheiro, Altay Veloso, Gilberto Gil and others. Looking for new challenges, Cris joined the lounge band Bossacucanova as guest vocalist, a role she still fulfills.

Cris' self-titled album is produced by Bossacucanova's keyboardist Alexandre Moreira. Although the group's influence is clearly noticeable, the CD covers a good variety of music. Cris shows her refined technique in a repertoire that ranges from old to new compositions and from Brazil to the USA; mostly recorded live in the studio. Of course this album couldn't do without the participation of Bossa Nova icon, guitarist and composer Roberto Menescal (1937), who's also a regular guest with his son Marcio's band Bossacucanova. His presence is prominent on various tracks, like the album's opener "Canoeiro," which he arranged beautifully in function of the jazzy accompaniment and the beautiful voice of Cris. The jazzy combo we hear on most tracks of this CD, is formed by the Fender Rhodes piano (Fernando Merlino), the electric bass (by Jacaré), Marcio Bahia on the drums and percussionist Sidinho.

This album is HEAT from the beginning of the first track to the final moments of the last. It features some of the best bossa nova sounds out today.
