Kiss Of Life - Only Human (1998)

Victoria Maxwell left the band during the early part of production of the group's second album, "Breathe." She was only featured on the first song on the record, "Everybody". The remainder of the vocal responsibility on that album, and all of the group's third album "Only Human," were performed by Angela Elizabeth John.

Kiss Of Life - Breathe (1996)

Kiss Of Life - Reaching For The Sun (1993)

UK band Kiss Of Life comprise Mike Benn (b. c.1963; keyboards) and Victoria Maxwell (b. 1970; vocals). Formed in 1991, their jazz, soul and R&B mix, with soothing female vocals and a leaning towards the club scene, soon attracted the attention of Virgin Records. The duo had met in Hamburg, where Maxwell, classically trained, was a dancer, while Benn was working on session tracks. Back in London, Benn hooked up with Chris Bangs, for whom Benn had co-written one track on the Totally Wired 9 album. It was through Bangs that Paul Weller got involved with Kiss Of Life, guesting on the track "Fiction In My Mind". Singles included "Love Has Put A Spell On Me" and "Holding On To A Dream".

Russell Léonce - Culture Of Love [2009]

His versatility is astounding. His voice channels the well-deep soulfulness of John Legend, the gritty earthiness of Damien Marley and the slippery smooth cadences of neo-soul star Musiq Soul Child and yet, Russell Léonce is anything but a replica of the voices that clutter the airwaves. Léonce adds a refreshing, new, standout sound to Caribbean music that will appeal to audiences across the nation of Trinidad and Tobago, throughout the Islands, the United Kingdom and the USA. Having worked with nearly all of Trinidad and Tobago’s top gospel artistes as a backup singer, including the brother-and-sister duo Ceejay & Luckey and The Love Circle, Russell has taken front stage on his debut project, ‘Culture of Love.’ Singing background vocals for many years with many artistes including sharing the stage with international Gospel recording artist Deitrick Haddon at the annual Pilgrimage, “I felt it was time to bring my brand of gospel music to the forefront” says Russell.

Many of the tracks penned by Russell himself, the disc boasts 12 new songs with 2 bonus tracks. Working on the album is award winning producer/songwriter/arranger Cleon Richardson and singer/songwriter/arranger Keith Kirk.

Undoubtedly, his sound has raised the curiosity of the local industry for its international sound and has attracted telecommunications phone company bmobile. Russell has since contributed jingles for bmobile, Cable & Wireless, Delta Petrolium and i95.5FM along with some other notable companies.

In November of 2006 Russell placed second in the local gospel competition in the south of Trinidad also collecting the prize for Most Spirit Filled Song ‘Unchanging’ (written by Russell) placed first. Altogether his main focus is bringing young people to Christ. Russell is an anointed worship leader and vocalist which is apparent in his live performances. He commands the stage and ushers his listeners into a spirit of worship.

With his humble spirit, gifted vocal ability, and eagerness to see young people give their hearts to Christ, Russell Léonce is unquestionably the new musical sensation within the Caribbean region that will take the gospel to new heights and greater possibilities.

The Rance Allen Group - All the Way [2002]

Rance Allen is considered to be one of the greatest vocalist of all time.

This Detroit-based, traditionally trained black gospel group formed in the '60s and were the first traditional gospel group to incorporate rock, jazz, and soul into their music. They were harbingers for the contemporary Christian music movement popularized in the late '70s by Andrae Crouch, Amy Grant, and the Winans. Rance Allen scored a Top 30 R&B hit in 1979 with "I Belong to You," one of two Stax singles that year to make the charts. His recordings for Gospel Truth, Capitol, and Stax proved quite popular among gospel audiences, and had some success attracting soul fans as well.

The Rance Allen Group - Smile [1979]

An oft-overlooked album that Rance and group recorded during a return to Stax after their record on Capitol with Larry Mizell. The groove here is more tightly produced than on their earlier Stax LPs, with more of a modern soul sound, and more of an orientation towards a dancefloor beat -- but the core of the music is still in the group's gospel-drenched soul style of the early years. Rance's voice is in beautiful form (as always), and his rich baritone sings out loud and clear on tracks like "I'm Thankful", "Smile", "Going Home", and "Where Have All Your Friends Gone".

Alexander Zonjic - Doin' The D [2009]

Flutist Alexander Zonjic may be Canadian by birth and by citizenship, but Detroit - just across the river from his hometown of Windsor, Ontario - has been his second home for the better part of three decades. Regardless of the numerous roles he may be playing in the Motor City's music and entertainment scene on any given day - recording artist and performer of international stature, morning drive-time jazz radio personality, concert promoter, restaurateur and more - Detroit has adopted Zonjic as one of their own and has supported every aspect of his multi-faceted career.

Aided and accompanied by a variety of songwriters, performers and friends, Zonjic tips his hat to his adopted city on, Doin' The D.The album features guest appearances by saxophonist Kenny G, trumpeter Rick Braun, Special EFX guitarist Chieli Minucci, vocalist Maysa Leak and many others. In addition to the many new faces, longtime collaborators Jeff Lorber and Bob James make substantial contributions to Doin' The D.

In the end, Doin' the D is more than just a star-studded nod to Zonjic's adopted hometown. In a larger sense, it's part of his ongoing effort to carry the torch passed on to him by figures like Canadian jazz flutist Moe Kaufmann and jazz innovator Herbie Mann - and to perhaps even be the messenger who takes the flute to a place of higher prominence as a voice in the smooth & pop-jazz idiom.

Valarie Adams - Valarie Adams [2007]

Valarie's got an old school voice and some warm contemporary production -- a great mix that makes for a strong debut! Adams really goes to town on the tunes -- singing them with a spirit full of joy, life, and energy.

The self entitled debut on RetroSoul Recordings fuses old school melodies and hooks with a touch of today’s sound. Some may recognize Valarie Adams as the veteran soul song-tress who has worked as lead vocalist for BT Express and The Dimensions Band. Dubbed “The First Lady of RetroSoul,” Valarie has stepped out on her own taking pages from her diary to tell “her-story.” Witness her poetry in motion as she delivers each song with style, sultryness and conviction. Exhibiting vocal skills of astounding depth and range, Valarie has often been compared to the likes of Shirley Murdock, Patti LaBelle and Dorinda Clark-Cole.

Jestofunk - 70 Miles from Philadelphia [2003]

Third studio album from Jestofunk, With special guest Hubert Tubbs, lead singer with 70's Tower of Power. Probably Jestofunk's most complete work to date. It includes a cover of Stevie Wonder's " Have A Talk With God".

Jestofunk - Universal Mother [2000]

Jestofunk, the cream of Italy's fantastic IRMA Records, returns with another album of their own potent stew of electronica, jazz, and funk. For those who haven't heard the group, it's best to start with Love in a Black Dimension, as this serves as a better introduction to the Jestofunk credo and style; long-time fans most likely have had this album before its (finally) U.S. release and knew what to expect. Universal Mother is neither better nor worse than its predecessor; it seems to be more of a continuation of the first album...play them back-to-back to hear what I'm saying. The group has expanded its sound a bit, but there really isn't much room for improvement here, only small refinements, as Jestofunk was already at the top of its game.

Kyle Eastwood - Now [2006]

NOW offers a cool twist of genre jumping selections that swirl a post-modern jazz sensibility with a hip Euro electronica lounge vibe. This sophisticated album also features a rich smattering of tasty vocals on cleverly written songs sung and penned in part by Ben Cullum (brother of singer Jamie Cullum). The merge between the sonic environments is done with grace and ease and makes for a captivating experience. Eastwood has been flirting with acid jazz, beats & bass and progressive jazz for years, however until NOW he hasn't quite landed smack dab in the middle of the money. The influences of this project have combined to create a collection of songs that are appealing to listeners on so many levels and from diverse backgrounds. Jazz enthusiasts will find the depth, Smooth Jazz fans will find the funk, after-party loungers will find the chill, and pop fans will find the vocals... those incredibly infectious vocals. And people say that the music industry isn't exciting anymore. Really... Eastwood proves hands down that passion will prevail when you get outside the box. Having grown up in a jazz culture here on the Monterey Peninsula, the prolific musician has managed to harness his jazz upbringing while allowing his Euro surroundings to infuse his music. (Kyle and his family reside in Paris.) Like father like son, the Eastwoods have been collaborating with their art forms over the years, in fact, Kyle composed the film score for Clint's Oscar-nominated LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA.

Nor Elle - T A X I [2008]

T a x i is the 4th album of nor elle aka Terry Lee Brown Junior. After "Phantom Of Life" (1998), "Slapstick" (2001) and "Kombologi" (2006) nor elle defines his own borders of down beat and lounge once again. Concentrating on wide scapes reduced melodic insinuation this time, the album seems to work as a screen. Like a movie without dialoque or a documentary without comments the music gives room for own imaginations and projections. Creating an atmosphere of a nocturnally taxi ride Terry gives a theme, but the rest is up to the listener. Where the taxi drives, how fast or slow, wether the driver is a good or bad one may depend on the mood of the one who to dives into the calm and fantastic world of these wonderful narrative tracks. No instruction is included but leaning back and letting fantasy fly over a warm street at a coast, through a forest or the centre of an illuminated city.

Nor Elle - Kombologi [2006]

"Komboloi" is the prayer chain of the Hilandar cloister on the mountain Athos, the monk's republic on the Greek peninsula Chalkidiki. Following this relic, the new phenomenal work of nor elle is called "Kombologi". An album that moves the center of the consciousness and touches with it ´s soul and mind like no other.

The album performs like a kind of musical novel that leads in wonderfully warm sounds and beats into the most wonderous spiritual corners of the world. The album tells stories from a light unconcerned life. The music is not in search for anything, it is just arrived and achieved its aims. There is no need to transport messages, just enjoy and reflect.

Nor Elle - Slapstick [2001]

This is the type of music one imagines accompanying thoserare serious cinematic renditions of human pathos. The background voices are like revenants that haunt the deepest segments of our minds. The electronic instrumentation never loses its energy. This sexy and relaxing album represents one of the best downtempo/future jazz choices you can make.

Nor Elle [Terry Lee Brown Jr.] - Phantom Of Life [1998]

The deep pulsing vibe of "Phantom of life" recalls a time of elegant electronic simplicity. This release is most rewarding late at night when I am actively thinking and I find myself drawn into a contemplative state of mind. A cross between almost ambient beats and beautiful melodies, "Phantom of life" resides somewhere in the realm of a Pete Namlook / Richie Hawtin release. Let me rephrase that, it's AMAZING!

Marcus Johnson - Poetically Justified [2009]

This is Johnson's 11th solo album and is thought to be his best yet. The record features acoutsic and electronic sets that will take the listener on a musical journey explaining how, through the rought times, those who have faith and work hard are "poetically justified" by their success. The records features collaborations with Najee, Phillip Martin, and Maysa - but the vibe rests solely in Johnson's hands.

Poetically Justified showcases several guest appearances from some of Johnson’s musician friends. R&B vocalist Miles Jaye lends his soulful voice to “Capice” and “Heaven”, and R&B siren Maysa (of Incognito fame) is featured on two tracks, one of which, “Master of My Heart”, is currently in heavy rotation on adult-contemporary radio station WHUR-FM in Washington, DC. Jazz heavy-hitter Najee adds his sultry sax sounds to the upbeat and rhythmic “I See You”. Johnson also collaborates with writer-producer, Robbie McDonald, (responsible for background tracks for Raheem Davaughn) on several stand-out tracks. These powerful tracks combined with Johnson’s masterful cover of Michael Jackson’s “This Place Hotel” (first single off CD) and his funky turn on the CD opener, “Chillaxin”, will no doubt wow Johnson’s loyal fans and earn Johnson yet another appearance on the Billboard charts.

Flowriders - R.U.E.D.Y [2007]

The brainchild of producer/beat maker Vincent Helbers, Flowriders roll up hip hop, broken beat and electronics, fat grooves, and tricky arrangements, to make the band's overall sound at once, raw, funky and sophisticated. The album features great vocalists like Nia Saw, Spoonface and regular collaborator Colonel Red, not to mention live drum contribution from Richard Spaven (MdCL, 4hero, TY and many others). This is cosmic, twisted hip-hop-bruk-soul laced with soulful vocals, all in the future foot forward manner.

Bob James - The Essencial Collection[2CD][2002]

Bob James Disc 1

Bob James Disc 2

Issued by the U.K.-based Metro Doubles label in 2002, Essential Collection: 24 Smooth Jazz Classics only overlaps 2001's Restoration anthology with eight of the same tracks, and concentrates on material originally released from 1974 to 1984 (apart from 1995's "Ensenada Madness," everything fits into that time frame). A fine chronological overview of James' most productive period, this is a very attractive package that includes informative and insightful liner notes. "Nautilus," "Westchester Lady," "Take Me to the Mardi Gras," "Angela (Theme From Taxi)," "Touchdown," and "Sign of the Times" are among the inclusions. Naturally, this double-disc set can serve any number of purposes: as pleasant, occasionally funky background music, as proof of your extensive knowledge of hip-hop samples, or as cruel torture for your jazz purist peers.

Dwayne Wiggins - Eyes Never Lie (2000)

Dwayne Wiggins is probably best known for either being a member of Tony Toni Tone or for inspiring Raphael Saddiq to want to play music like his big brother. While both of those feats are enough to hang one's hat on, we shouldn't forget that Dwayne is a pretty talented musician in his own right, as shown by his 2000 release "Eyes Never Lie". This album came out smack dab in the middle of the "Neo-Soul" movement (Voodoo by D'Angelo was released the same year), and it doesn't disappoint. One of the interesting things when listening to solo records from someone usually associated with a band is that you get to hear what sound they brought to the group. Given the heavy doses of R&B and Jazzy flavor on this record, it's clear that Tony Toni Tone wasn't just a one man operation. "R&B Singer" and "What's Really Going On (Strange Fruit)" are great tracks to get you started, and where you go from there is up to y'all.

Portrait - Share My Love (2005)

The members of Portrait released "Share My Love," their fourth album, independently in 2005.

Portrait - Picturesque (1996)

"Picturesque" was recorded exclusively for release in the Asian market. The album featured Portrait's previously released cover of "How Deep Is Your Love" as well as several other covers of popular songs.

Portrait - All That Matters (1995)

This is their 2nd (and final) studio release. Their sound is much more mature then their first release, may have been too mature for their own good. As people like R. Kelly started to piss on people, er, dominate the music industry, there was seemingly no place on the charts for old fashioned romantic love jams. Still, this is the perfect album to listen to while chilling on the couch with your lady, both with a glass of wine in hand. Albums like this remind us of how much vocal talent there in this underrated era in music history.

Portrait - Portrait (1992)

Portrait was one of the many R&B/New Jack groups who populated the music scene in the early / mid 90s. These cats were based out of California and tended to focus on slow sultry jams... think grown-folk R&B music with an edge.

Portrait is their self-titled debut album. Songs like "Honey Dip" and "Here We Go Again" got good rotation on "Urban Radio" stations. (This is back when there was a difference between the R&B and Pop charts y'all!). Like much of the music of this era, it combined a quartet of soulful singers with new jack beats and an occasional rap verse for the bridge. As a lover of ballads myself, I'm partial to "Yours Forever" and "On and On" off this record. To a younger listener this music may sound dated, but to those of us who lived thru the era, it still sounds pretty good, if you ask me.

Keith Sweat - Twisted [VLS][1996]

Easily one of Keith Sweat's best songs, together with Kut Klose this is classic Keith.

Keith Sweat - Get Up On It [1994]

The set is classic Keith Sweat, filled to the brim with the pleading ballads that made this Harlem crooner so popular. Sweat began to utilize female background vocals, courtesy of Kut Klose, to full effect on this album, especially on the hit title track (one of the album's shining moments), a trend that he perfected on his huge 1996 self-titled comeback album. So Get Up on It finds Sweat in a stage of transition, leaving the formula that began to grow stale on Keep It Comin' and beginning to feature female backing vocals at center stage, somewhat similar to what Barry White and Luther Vandross had done before him. Get Up on It churned out two other singles, the up-tempo yet slightly unimaginative "How Do You Like It?" (which, as the set's lead single, didn't really work to catapult the album to massive early sales) and the big ballad "When I Give My Love," which is pure Keith Sweat. Other standouts include "Put Your Loving Through the Test," featuring the late Roger Troutman, and "Telephone Love."

Keith Sweat - Keep It Comin' [1991]

"Give Me What I Want" featuring Silk on background and taking the song to the next level of sexiness. Silk and Mr. Sweat invites you with "The Ten Commandments Of Love" with the background vocals saying, "...come on, come on, come on, come on baby...".The production of this album is very professional - Keith Sweat knows his sound, and careful listening reveals his cross-over with his first album's co-producer Teddy Riley.

Funkadelic - The Electric Spanking Of War Babies [1981]

A surprisingly wonderful record! Back in the day, we remember that we didn't like these later P-Funk albums because they weren't as druggy, trippy, or guitar heavy as the early stuff. Now, though, they sound pretty darn sweet to our ears -- especially this one, which has lots of cool pre-electro grooves with sweet keyboards, vocoder vocals, and spacey basslines that blow out in deep rich waves of funky soul. The whole thing's an amazing evolution of the George Clinton groove -- and titles include "Electric Spanking Of War Babies", "Funk Gets Stronger", "Shockwaves", "Icka-prick", "Brettino's Bounce", and "She Loves You". Nice Pedro Bell cover, too!

Funkadelic - Tales Of Kidd Funkadelic [1976]

An oft-overlooked gem by Funkadelic -- the group's last album for Westbound, and a record that really has them growing into a great new groove! Bootsy and Eddie Hazel have stepped aside for the set, but that gives Bernie Worrell plenty of room to work his magic on keyboards -- in a way that really increases the spacier elements of the set, and almost trades a messed-up moogy sort of feel for the heady guitars of earlier years -- a slippery kind of Funky Worm groove that we totally love! The set is self-described as "delightfully putrid" on the Pedro Bell cover -- and we couldn't agree more! Titles include "Undisco Kidd", "Let's Take It To The People", "How Do Yeaw View You", "Butt-to-Butt Resuscitation" and "Take Your Dead Ass Home!"

Funkadelic - Hardcore Jollies [1976]

One of the sweetest Funkadelic albums from the middle period, and a good batch of tracks that often gets overlooked in the haze of similar Pedro Bell covers! Don't miss this one, though -- because it is a very strong album -- key in the shift from more guitar-based funk to more groove-oriented rhythms -- and a record that's got more than a few tasty numbers. Includes nice ones like "You Scared The Lovin Outta Me", "Comin Round The Mountain", and "If You Got Funk, You Got Style", plus a live version of "Cosmic Slop" that's totally great!

Funkadelic ~ Cosmic Slop

Bottom line: If you are accumulating research material for your PhD in funkology, these CDs are absolutely essential.

Quintetto X - Novo Esquema Da Bossa [1995]

Quintetto X link 2

This time Schema Records, would like to present you the re-mastered version of “Novo Esquema Da Bossa” of Quintetto X previously released in autumn 1995. However this version (apart of new cover art) contains also three tracks taken from the 12” - RTX201 “Balanca pema/Suono nuovo/Mentira” which has never been released on the CD format. With this single "Quintetto X" confirms their strong Italian jazz identity with an album that demonstrates a spontaneous yet well crafted fusion between Soul, Jazz and Brazilian Bossa. "Quintetto X" is from Bari, which is on the edge of the “heel” in Italy. This land is a meeting point where energies gather shaping surroundings and emotions. “The Fez” cultural group has made these surroundings the settings for their creations. Comments taken from the linear notes of the album: “Novo Esquema Da Bossa “or else “New Bossa Outlook” is for us a movement, an attitude and a rhythm. It is the development of an idea that evolves from the appreciation of its own cultural distinctiveness. It is the southern light. It is contemporary music inspired from Afro- American, Brazilian and Italian jazz which slinks form the author’s song to the beat poetry. It is the tempo of modern music that creates its best art with delicacy. It favours spontaneity rather than perfection as well as creation as opposed to the final product.

Emanative - Space [2009]

A wickedly jazzy little group from the UK -- one that features lots of great keyboards from Jessica Lauren, a London artist we've loved since her first cosmic fusion sides in the 90s! Lauren sings a bit on the record, but mostly concentrates on handling a wide range of keys -- Fender Rhodes, Arp, organ, and more -- often processed a bit, which further brings out their spacier qualities, making the album come across like some lost 70s space fusion nugget, but with a few contemporary London touches as well! A few tracks have lead vocals -- by singers who include Deborah Jordan, Heidi Vogel, and Liz Elensky -- and although the instrumentation includes flute, tenor, bass, drums, and other jazzy instrumentation, there's also a soulful flow to the whole set too -- kind of that hip mix of cosmic jazz and soulful vibes you might find from some of the hipper Japanese groups of late.

The singles 'When On Earth' & 'Petite Planete' have both gained huge support from DJ's and tastemakers across the world including Gilles Peterson, who included the track 'Turn Your Lights On' on his most recent 'Brownswood Bubblers' compilation. Expect to see Emanative performing live through the coming year and keep your eyes open for a remix EP featuring excursions from Nwachukwu, Marc Rapson & Jazz Chronicles.

Al Green - Lord Will Make a Way [1980]

This 1980 album was released after Green received a wake-up call by way of tumble off a stage in Cincinnati. No doubt Green planned a straight-laced, devotional work with The Lord Will Make a Way, but his charisma and sex appeal was also part of the package. The title track is powerful, reverent, and sensual, with Green's voice possessing the intensity and tone of his earlier secular tracks. Like many of his best albums, this one has an immediacy that makes it a joy to listen to.Another standard, Alex Bradford's "Too Close" has a poignant segment near the end that has Green repeatedly whispering "thank you Jesus" with his guitar sweetly strumming in the background. An original track, the pragmatic and committed "In the Holy Name of Jesus" has the poise of his Willie Mitchell productions. Green creates a relaxed atmosphere for Lord Will Make a Way, an excellent debut for his gospel career.
