Kenny Lattimore - Timeless [2008]

After six years of touring and recording as a duo with his wife Chanté Moore, Kenny Lattimore makes a stunning return as a solo artist with his new album, Timeless. Influenced by traditional R&B, jazz, funk, and gospel, Lattimore has become one of today's leading black male vocalists, known for his passionate, soulful and intense, yet subtle style. Lattimore puts his unique stamp on a diverse collection of classics including: "You Are My Starship," The Beatle's hit "And I Love Her" and Jeff Buckley's "Everybody Here Wants You".

Despite his past successes, Timeless demonstrates that Kenny Lattimore is more interested in making expressive, enduring music than pandering to momentary musical trends. "I like that Verve is a label that cares about music," he asserts, adding, "They gave me the freedom to be myself and trusted me to follow my heart. I've been in so many situations where I'd finish an album and the record company comes back and says, "We need a radio hit", and they ask you to come up with a song that sounds exactly like what everyone else is doing. With this project, I felt like the label was more interested in getting the artistry right, and then presenting it to people and allowing them to decide if they like it."

Kenny Lattimore - Weekend [2001]

Kenny Lattimore hit the R&B scene in 1996 with a self-titled debut that showcased his considerable vocal talent and songwriting skills. On his second album, From the Soul of Man (1998), Lattimore experimented with acoustic guitar and gospel influences, revealing a complex musician behind the matinee-idol looks. Weekend might have extended this experimental trend, but, unfortunately, it's more conventional than its predecessor, playing it safe with Babyface-style ballads and "Girl, I can treat you better than him" lyrics.

It's not revolutionary, but Lattimore does this music better than anyone else. The album's bouncy first single, "Weekend," has a decidedly retro-'80s feel owing to a sample from Blondie's "Rapture" buried in the bass line. Lattimore collaborates with Raphael Saadiq on the smooth, sexy "Come to Me," but the wannabe urban lyrics of "Can You Feel Me," a duet with Shanice Wilson, sink an otherwise solid effort. Weekend lives up to its name--relaxing, romantic, sweet, and over far too soon.

Kenny Lattimore - From the Soul of Man [1998]

Despite its lumbering length and some slick, late-'90s R&B formalities, Kenny Lattimore's second album is a real treat. Combining smooth grooves with an even silkier voice, Lattimore shifts from bedroom operator to new jack king with an ease that seems neither forced nor affected on From the Soul of Man. The R&B stew is made even heartier by a couple of inspired covers, even if they're not totally successful in their execution (who knew that "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" could be so sexy?). When the album tosses in basic contemporary soul ingredients -- songs that are more finely chiseled than actually tuneful, occasional robotic singing, glossy production that's hiding something -- it flows into mind-numbing conventionality. But when Lattimore gently soaks in the material (nearly all of it penned by him), From the Soul of Man is truly a spirited affair.

Kenny Lattimore - Days Like This: The Best of [2004]

Before the whole neo-soul explosion, a whole camp of singer/songwriters in the R&B market made quality music minus all of the marketing fuss tagging them as the next big thing. Less than ten years into Kenny Lattimore's career, Columbia saw fit to release a greatest-hits compilation covering Lattimore's quiet but immensely successful R&B career. Like many of his forefathers and contemporaries, Lattimore has mastered the art of the smooth ballad and has made several of his influences more than widely known in his vocal delivery and productions (immediate and somewhat convenient comparisons would be to Marvin Gaye and Babyface).

Hey Blak:

Thanks so much for the Kenny Lattimore postings. I have all of these in my collection already except for the Best of which I wasn't aware of him having such a product on the market. I have always felt he was very underrated and had not received prominent recognition. Thanks again.
