Norm Douglas - Holding Back The Years [2008]
Equally proficient on soprano, alto and tenor saxophone, Norm Douglas has brought an ultra-smooth approach to West Coast jazz. Since resuming his musical career, following a five year hiatus, Douglas has continued to evolve as a musician. After studying with southern California-based alto saxophone player, Paul Carman, in the mid-1980s, Douglas has continued to find his unique voice on the instrument. His debut album, The First Time, released in April 2000, was a collaboration with pianist/composer/producer Ron Kobayashi, who penned six of the album's ten tunes. Douglas showcased his own skills as a composer with a pair of melodic instrumentals -- "I Can Do It" and "Tara's Song". A graduate of Youngstown State University in northeast Ohio, where he studied music education, Douglas played tenor saxophone with a series of bands in Cleveland and Pittsburgh while still a student. Although he briefly worked as a high school band director, he left music to become a salesman. Five years later, he succumbed to the encouragement of friends and resumed his music career. He has yet to look back.
