The Jam:The Larry Graham & Graham Central Station Anthology [2001][CD 2]
Graham Central Station, with Larry Graham on bass and Lady Chocolate doing some monster vocals was always one of the greats for pure funk music.Larry Graham, whose percussive and funky bass style(thumpin'-slappin'-pluckin') was one of the main ingredientsto Sly's catchy lyrics, harmonic hooks and rhythmic flightsof the imagination!Larry took it upon himself to form one of the baddest, most influential and most underated bands of the 70's..."Graham Central Station!!" The best of all their albums from 1973-1980 is on here and in addition to Larry's innovative bass playing you also hear early forays into electronic instrumentation with the use
of the "funk box", an early drum machine, as well as synthesizers and moog bass around the same time as people like Stevie Wonder,P-Funk and others were introducing them to black music. The grooves are infectious, the ballads lush.
Not only does this 2 cd set define GCS, but it also defines an indescribable era of music!

Graham Central Station-Graham Central Station [1973]
GCS Link 2
After all the quarrelling and bickering between Graham and his predecessor Sly Stone, this was the initial release of the group that Graham originally was just going to produce. You hear Sly's influence, but you can hear GCS start a legacy of their own. The funk permeates throughout with the tunes People, Hair and its social political ramifications and the groups first hit, Can You handle it. Lenny Williams is featured on Tell me what it is.This was the fonkiest slap an' tickle, honky tonk, ghetto cruising, soul stealing, gospel hollering, doo wap scattin' disc I ever heard.
Pure funk, pure soul, undiluted and raw. If only such bands thrived today...
