Dwele - Sketches of a Man [2008]
Dwele Link 2
The 2008 album from Dwele, is Sketches of a Man. Neo-soul singer/songwriter/producer Dwele grew up on Detroit's west side, listening to soul music from Motown visionaries Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye as well as jazz on the radio. Born Andwele Gardner, he began writing songs at the age of ten, after his father was murdered outside his home, and attended Cody High in Detroit. Dwele spent a year studying music at Wayne State but then opted for an informal education, making music at his home while living in Dearborn and working for AAA. His demo tape, 1998's The Rize, made waves around the Motor City, and he spent time collaborating with Detroit hip-hop group Slum Village and Philadelphia rapper Bahamadia. This album brings Dwele back to a more gritty, experimental, and non-overproduced sound - one that originally caught listener's ears with his first EP demo Rize released in 1998, which I'll post later.

Dwele - Some Kinda [2005]
Some Kinda Link 2
You'll find a perfect blend of soul, jazz, funk, and blues on Some Kinda, a change that probably comes with most follow-up albums by artists trying to find their sound. Dwele dives right into the melting pot of genres with the song "Holla," a cut that's smooth enough to be played in those ultra swank lounges that us 'Grown And Sexy' people like to frequent. "A Pimp's Dream" is rich in jazz, with horns resonating ever so eloquently and Dwele lacing some of his own bravado in the lyrics. "Know Your Name" and "Lay It Down" are probably two songs that most would say sound a lot like music from his Subject disc, but they're certified bangers regardless of what album they're on. "My Lova/Movement," "Weekend Love," and the title track "Some Kinda" are all good examples of standard Dwele songs.

Dwele - Subject [2003]
Subject Link 2
One-man show Dwele’s debut, Subject, comes correct with neo-soul staples in place. That is to say, there are enough acoustic guitars, stacked harmony vocals, mid-tempo grooves, and sound effects of scratchy vinyl to power an old-school symposium. What the Detroit-bred associate of backpack-rappers Slum Village lacks in depth, he makes up for in sheer summer-ready listenability. Dwele’s genre could be called neo-neo-soul; he seems to owe as much to the foundations laid down by D’Angelo as to obvious idol Stevie Wonder. While lacking the idiosyncrasies of those artists, Dwele manages to slide out of the speakers with enough skills to convince a casual listener to let the languid mood take over. Subject’s title track is its most fully imagined; the needle-on-record gambit that obscures its likable chorus could actually be heard as a conceptual gambit rather than a mere irritation. Elsewhere, Dwele piles on the quiet-storm stuff so masterfully that he sows confusion, while at least seemingly hoping to settle down with one conquest. Vision is hardly up to talent here, but for now, Dwele gets a pass on winning sonics alone.
