Alex Bugnon - Free [2005]

Free Link 2

On Free, Alex Bugnon continues in the direction taken on 2003’s Southern Living, working in Atlanta with producer and fellow-keyboardist Phil Davis. Together they’re emphasizing a lighter, spacious, more natural sound. They’ve continued to reduce the heavy synthesizer tracks, spotlighting Bugnon’s acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes with strong melodies, light funk grooves and bright percussive detail. The band is made up of crack session players, including strong contributions from soprano saxophonist Vincent Henry, who coils in and out of the title track, and bassist Victor Bailey. Davis’s production values come to the fore here, adding rhythmic insinuation with exotic world-beat detail on tracks like "Sierra Leone." As usual, Bugnon’s piano sound has a special resonance. Whether it’s the percolating "Fingertips," the sultry "Pillow Talk" or the deep soul groove of "Downtime," Bugnon creates some soulful, floating moods here, reaching a career high in the process.

Alex Bugnon-This Time Around [1993]

Alex Link 2

This is likely the best Alex Bugnon album you've never heard of. Released in 1993, "This Time Around" is miles ahead of its contemporaries with its elegant production and excellent song choices.
There's plenty to love, however. "Sweet Sticky Thing" is more timeless than the original Ohio Players' version. "The Heart Song" is far less insipid than the title might suggest. Plus, the middle of the album holds some hidden, subtle gems in "Dasheen" and "The Way We Used To Be."

Whether you're new to Alex Bugnon's music or an old fan, "This Time Around" is a good place to start.

Alex Bugnon - 107 Degrees in the Shade [1991]

107 link 2

Alex Bugnon exhibits a high level of creativity and playfulness throughout this work, plenty of suggestive and smooth pieces, but signed with a very personal style. 107 in the shade, for instance, initiates with an exotic melody played in accordion. His French roots are shown in the first two tracks. Elegance and brightness would be the most appropriate terms to describe this notorious CD.

This is sunday morning, read the paper in bed, snuggle up and just plain mellow out!

Alex Bugnon - Love Season [1989]

Alex Bugnon's "Love Season" still sets a standard for modern jazz improvisation and good production even though it was made in the late 1980s. Along with the obvious jazz influence, there is a strong R&B dynamic, including covers of Brenda Russell ("Piano in The Dark") and Gap Band ("Yearning for Your Love") songs. For the most part, the songs are beautifully crafted and don't drag on past their usefulness like many of the pop-jazz albums that followed this release.
