Doc Powell - Doc Powell [2006]

A true innovator on the pop/R&B scene, acclaimed guitarist Doc Powell delivers an album full of great songs, blending touches of hip-hop, old-school soul, and in-the-pocket grooves with elements of his past successes.

From the Artist:
Once we started working on "Let Go," and "Together We Can," I realized that I had a handful of others that would be perfect for both classical and electric guitar. I almost wanted to call the album "Duets" because I show two sides of myself in a single recording. Calling it Doc Powell was just a way to convey the idea that, even with an entirely new guitar sound, this album is still very much who I am. It’s another voice that opens up the music quite a bit and adds incredible dimension. It strikes a special chord in the ear, in the mind, and even in the heart and soul. On ‘Together We Can,’ I’m playing octaves on the electric guitar in a Wes Montgomery style, and the classical guitar is playing the same thing but with a different tone. I really like the way the two instruments sound together.

Doc Powell - 97th and Columbus [2003]

This CD engages you. Several different sytles including Doc's homage to several other well known artists, George Benson, Marvin Gaye and EW&F. The title track should do very well on radio but the meat to this CD are the rest of the other tunes. Now if only I could visit 97th & Columbus. Until then, this CD will do just fine!

Doc Powell - Laid Back [1996]

Excellent CD full of tremendously talented artist. Out of all of Powell's CD's this is he's best. I have recommended and played this CD for several close friends and jazz enthusiast all of whom enjoyed it very much. No brainer. Winner.

Doc Powell - Inner City Blues [1996]

Doc's first album is an EXTRAORDINARY one !

First of all, it shows how talented this man is with his guitar. The opening track ("Bahamma Momma"), "new day" or "On the other side" are good examples of virtuosity (sharp and rapid playing). The album is intelligently balanced : instrumentals, vocal contributions, tribute (to Eric Gale), cover version...without being pasty or cheesy or sounding overproduced, a very common thing in this genre, you will agree.

All of Doc Powell's music is HEAT!

I especially like "We'll Make It Last" and his remake of "All This Love" with Philip Bailey.

I've been looking for "Inner City Blues" for about 4, 5 years since I sold my one and only copy on CD.

I really can't thank you enough.

Sorry, or better yet, glad to tell you, Lord Blak, that Doc's first album was released in 1987, "Love Is Where It's At." I used to own it on vinyl way back when, and it was a very solid first effort from Luther's go to guitar man. He had a couple of other releases before "Inner City Blues" as well. You already have one listed here, and the other one is called, "The Doctor."
Just thought you would like to know.
